Turkey Hunting Whether it's spring or fall doesn't matter to this bunch. Great tips on calling, bustin flocks, using blinds and more.

Default decoys

Do you think a jake decoy scares other jakes away? My new jake decoy is realistic, and two jakes came in strutting within 50 yds. but would not come in closer. Maybe it works with toms but not jakes?!

swimmer

I went to a turkey seminar for PRIMOS Calls and the experianced turkey hunter/speaker told us that he used a decoy one time and did not after that because he said the decoys red color was to bright and it scared off the toms & jakes..

Also i read an article in Field & Stream were the editor had said that toms & jakes avoid decoys because they do not want to fight a more dominant tom/jake and their for avoid the decoy all together...

I have good friends that told me they don't even use decoys and because im a new turkey hunter i went out and bought a jake decoy from featherflex but im not sure if i should us it because the colors are so bright it might scare away any birds i might have a chance to kill..

I hope this helps..

swimmer, Both of my turkeys last year came in to only my hen decoy. Never would come in to my combo of hen and jake. This year I used the combo...nothing. But, the next day went with only my hen...Bam, in comes a tom after only 10 min. No gobble, just a single cluck that I responded lightly to with a soft purr and went silent. The jake decoy, in my limited experience, keeps them away. Jake will stay at home...one less item to carry. Take care, Tony!

Ya never know though. Last year I was using a 1/2 strut jake decoy with a pretty bright head and as soon as the toms would see it, it was like havin them on a leash!! In the would trot, not even slowing down. They went past my hen and right to the jake. I let one have it with my gun a couple days after my dad had hit one with an arrow.
