Default 835 or 870

Im in the marcket for a shotgun, I toyed with the idea of an O/U but more recently have been leaning towards a pump. Given a choice of the moss 835 or 500 or the Rem 870 wich would you choose and why? Also would you go with a black and camo it yourself or buy it camo? Id probly never shoot 3.5'' shells but having a 3.5'' chamber would be nice, but not necessary. Are all Mossbergs barrels ported? Would these guns work (with difrent chokes) for rabbit and waterfowl hunting and squirrel? Ive heard the mossberg actions are sloppy, is this true? Is this a gun i can use for many season an not feel the need for another (other than just wanting a new tool)?

I dont think as long as I've been on this forum that I've read anything bad about a Rem. I dont think I can say that for the mossbergs... I know 2 people that had mossbergs and my Remingtons out shoot both. You do what you want dude

I have both, Personally I think the 870 is a better gun. The Mossberg actions are slopy at least mine was. The barrles for my Mossber 12ga are ported and I would just camo the gun myself.

Tree, first off, you have twice as many parts in the Moss when you do a general fieldstrip, and yes, I find them a bit sloppy. I`ve had them before but have always gone back to my 870 which I have used for over 35 years. My WingMaster was stolen years ago but I have been using an Express since then with no trouble what so ever(12ga., 3"mag). I have shot countless ducks, geese, rabbits, and upland with it. It has gone for the occasional swim in swamps too. Yes, I am partial to 870s and I appologize to those folks of a different opinion.

So far the 870 is uncontested, that makes it easier Ive also read a thread on another forumn and more than 2/3's of the votes where for the 870.

if you have the cash go with the 870.....its all around a better built gun.....but i do have both.....i have a 500 and an 870....and my dad has an 835.....the mossbergs can double as boat anchors if you ever need one......thats one thing i dont like...and they feel....bulky....and hte action is sorty sloppy...and not sturdy...i heard from a very smart guy (gunwise smart) that they only have one locking lug instead of the normal 2....and my 870 patterns alot better then the mossberg.....but i never played with loads and chokes with either of them....the rem loved the first thing i tried so i didnt even mess around.....the mossberg i shot a few diffrent shells and they were all abotu the same....all loose patterns.....but the mossberg is my workhorse....ive hunted almost everything there is with it in all conditions and weather...and been pretty rough on it....and its always been there for me.......its my goto shotgun...my 870 is strictly turkeys....i like both guns.....but i think the 870 is built better....but ive fired 100s of rounds through my mossberg....and bought it used for like 100and some change.....shot every game load imagineable...even buckshot....only thing i havent fired YET was a slug.....and thats coming soon.....the mossberg....my new deer slayer......it can do it......does it all but cooks the game for me.....

well first thing i think is benelli nova.........but after owning both i liked the pointability of the 870 and the toughness of the moss, so pick whatever you like best!!!!!!

I've had both, the 870 is my choice, no contest. For the money I think they are one of the best if not the best shotgun made.

I own both guns, the remington is more solid, but as for a turkey pattern the 835 blows away the compitition hands down. I put a comp-choke in the 835 and have been crushing turkey's. All guns are different but my 835 with winchester high velosity 6's put 64 pellets in the head and neck of a paper turkey target at 50 yards. That's performance.

i have the rem 870 super mag and love it.i dont baby it,its been durable and reliable.looking back i should of went with cammo.tape is a pain,it gets wet and you have to get it off right away or you get surface rust,it also frays on me when hunting.i dont like gunsocks.last place i looked they wanted $175.00 to cammo it out,i suppose it could be more or less.why not get the 3 1/2 inch option, you will probably have the gun a lifetime.good luck.
