Turkey Hunting Whether it's spring or fall doesn't matter to this bunch. Great tips on calling, bustin flocks, using blinds and more.

Default Black Hills Bound

Well, me and the girlfriend are leaving for SD after work today. Figure on driving straight thru and getting there around sun up. Going to spend the first morning trying to locate a flock and go from there. Have 3 to 4 days to hunt so we'll see what happens. I'm looking forward to getting out in the hills and making some trax, seeing wildlife, just enjoying the time away from work.

Where are you staying? We hunted the Black Hills over Easter weekend and filled 1 of 2 tags. (posted pic on 4/22) Hunted between Rockerville and Hill City, southwest of Rapid City, beautiful country and the bird numbers are real good, but at that time the Toms were still henned up. They were somewhat receptive to our calling, they would gobble back and strut but then hang up and stay with the hens they already had, so we had to ambush the birds we did get on. Let me know if I can help.

Good Luck to both of you!!

Thanx SD Browning. I'm heading west of Rapid City a ways. I know it's different than hunting the eastern birds so I'm going to do the run and gun thing. Try to locate them, get around in front of them, call to them, and if they don't respond I'll try the ambush tactic. I can't wait as I'm looking forward to seeing that country!!

We are sleeping in the back of the truck the first night and then have a hotel in Rapid City. It'll be a drive in the mornings from there so we'll just get up earlier than usual. I usually can't sleep much when turkey hunting and usually am up at 3:30am. Too pumped up!!!

Good luck on your hunt. There are a lot of birds out here and the hunting should be great. The hens have really broken up the last few days and are starting to nest. You should hit it just right.

Thanx Mez for the update. Are the birds hard to find out there?? This is my first trip so not sure what to expect.
