Well i got a late start on friday did not get in the wood till 10 am!!! My huntin buddy sent me to a spot were he had wounded a gobbler the weekend before !!! I set up 5 decoys 3 hens 2 jakes !!! I proceeded to call with my slate call !!! I heard a gobble about a mile away !!! He only answered my once and that was that!! So for 2 more hours i tried every call i had carried into the woods !!! Well i decided to call it a day !! But i thought what the heck i will hit my glass call one more time !!!! All of a sudden a big deep gobble came from 30 feet in front of me behind a doubled trunk cedar tree!!! I must have jumped 2 feet off my the ground!!! I dropped my call between my feet and as fast as i could get my get ready He appeared at 10 feet away !!! Of coarse my gun barrel was pointed away from him!! So as not to spook him i waited for him to move to my left !!! Sure enough he went behind the tree and when he came out from behind the tree i had him right at the end of my gun barrel !! I mean he was 8 feet from the end of my barrel!!!! He was so close i aimed for the base of his neck along his back !!!!! From the time i hit my last call to the i shot was less then 30 secounds !!! So i NEVER SAW HIM COMIN !!!! He was 20# 10" beard and 1" spurs !!! So i figured if it were not for all the decoys he would have busted me because I was making all sorts of movement trying to get ready to leave the woods !!! I am getting the pics back today and will post them tomarrow!!
Congratulations on a good hunt! Sounds like that encounter was a little too close for comfort (but can a gobbler really every be too close?), but keeping still and waiting for the right moment will do it every time.
