Turkey Hunting Whether it's spring or fall doesn't matter to this bunch. Great tips on calling, bustin flocks, using blinds and more.

Default Square Shot?????

After cleaning my turkey this past weekend, I noticed that the shot pellets recovered during the processing were square. I mean almost perfect looking squares!

My pattern aint the best in the world and it got me thinking that maybe this choke was to tight or something. I dont think its to tight, its the factory Mossberg "Ulti-Full" choke.

Or is it the loads?? Winchester Supreme Turkey Loads 3" #4's Not enough buffering in the shot???

Any thoughts on this??

Mike,

My only guess would be from a physical standpoint, which would relate to compression analysis.

Would seem it most likely occurred due to tight constriction, as the shot was actually reshaped, which would take 1) intense density coupled with, 2) intense pressure. The only area of the explosion that would compensate for this is the choke, unless that particular shell was "overloaded". If you have more shells from that box, and have access to a scale, try to weigh each shell and check the tolerance.

But that's just a biologist's best educated guess...

I thought most pellet deformation occurs at ignition not while passing through the choke.
