This past weekend was opening turkey season here in California. I'm a beginning turkey hunter and I'm not sure if I was hearing turkeys or not. I got a number of single yelps in response to my calling and while on the move, I even saw a jake or hen running through an open area in the woods. When I called to it - I got another single yelp. I never did hear any gobbles. By late morning I did hear some consistent cutting - but it was far away. Any advice from you guys would be helpful - was what I heard a turkey?
Thanks!

It was only one yelp and what ever was making the yelp came within about 40 yards of one of the places I setup - then spooked and I could hear it moving away from me (it covered some ground pretty fast!).

Without a recording, I can't be sure that what you heard was a turkey.
But, What on earth were you doing calling while scouting? Not meaning to scold, but never, never call while scouting. All you will accomplish is to educate the turkeys -- even if you get a response.
In any event, the sound you want to hear is a gobble. THAT, you will have no doubt about when you hear it.

RE: Am I "hearing" Turkeys?
..Just a guess,if it spooked you herd a loud alarm cluck, and then it was gone...one
single loud note, and yes sometimes it could sound like a single yelp..[:-][:-]

I think Totoe is right you probably heard an alarm putt. Sometimes a sharp putt will sounded like someone pulling a cork out of a bottle a yelp is much longer sound.
