How do you know which call to use. Im not talking about box or mouth or slate. Im talking about what kind of mouth or what kind of slate. How do you know what different " chirps" mean?

Depends on the situation. If I want to call to a distant bird or locate a gobbler, I' ll use my aluminum slate call. If he' s close I' ll use a quieter softer sounding call(s) like huntnma advises.
I recently got a slate call called The Finisher. Haven' t used it yet, but it makes really good sounding soft calls, at least to my ears.
