Default anyone?

anyone us or make a bass wood striker for a friction call??? this year in wood shop we got some bass wood in for some reason...it kinda looks like poplar but i didnt get to feel it or look at the grain yet...anyone ever use it for strikers?? does it work nicely?? i made one from poplar and it was just too soft...the only sounds it made was just a high pitched squeek....if basswood isnt good im just going to buy some 2x2s to turn on the lathe or diffrent good woods...maybe even bring in my own wood from the woods....i have some dried apple and sassafrass and locust...anyone ever use any of those for strickers?? hows it sound?? i have an apple i turned with a knife and it works pretty good but is off balance (you try turning by hand! lol) and i cant get it to sound great...i think it has potential though.....any info?? thanx....

Default RE: anyone?

Mauser,I' ve never made a striker from basswood but I used to use it to carve duck decoys. It' s a really soft wood without any real grain pattern.Apple, sassafrass and locust all make nice sounds.
