Turkey Hunting Whether it's spring or fall doesn't matter to this bunch. Great tips on calling, bustin flocks, using blinds and more.

Default Do Turkeys change their color?

We have Merriam's here. I've noticed that the tom's head/neck area is much brighter red in the spring (should have had 2 today!!), while the toms in the fall are a more blueish than red.
Do they change color from spring to fall?
And is this because it is matting season? Or am I just nuts?
(Don't answer that)

Yes they do, but its not an over time thing. Toms change their color to show moods and such. Your not nuts. LOL

Yes,Male turkeys heads change colors.
As they are walking around in front of you!
1 Minute they will have a cotton white head with blue and red mixture
Then they will change to just a bright red hed & neck!!
Its pretty cool..

when the heads are red they are gobbleing, guess it could have something to do with mateing season, but as spring starts, they're heads start getting red.

It's like the rut for deer. The deer don't change color but hormone levels vary and that causes the change to the bright red or, depending on age, white head (easterns do anyway...)

Have you ever seen the Fathers up close? All different colors. Turkeys are so Ugly but, yet so beautyful. God knew what he was doing!
