Turkey Hunting Whether it's spring or fall doesn't matter to this bunch. Great tips on calling, bustin flocks, using blinds and more.

Default Turkey hunting and treestands

I will be bowhunting and getting away from the shotgun this year.

I will probably be using magnus bullheads.

I have never hunted in a treestand while turkey hunting. I know you have to be ready to pack and move some but I thought one of my setups where birds typically rooost around I begin the hunt from a treestand. I do no have a groundblind is the reason for this. Has anyone had success from up above and do the turkeys respond to calling in a normal way. I will probably set up some decoys as well so that would probably distract the birds enough and not be wandering who is calling from the trees?

Just wanted to see if anyone had experience with this.

Yes - tree stands work and I know of a few who do this.

However you are seen from a longer ways off and movement can be crucial.

But I know of guys who sit their favorite tree stand each yr and call. They do shoot good birds but each uses a shotgun.

Yeah, if you are going to shoot a bow out of a tree stand at turkey I would say make sure you have the range right on. If you don't have a range finder, you might want to invest in one.

I missed one several years ago while bowhunting for deer a few years ago (it was also archery turkey season-fall). I was a little off on my range and ended up clipping some feathers off of it's belly, and then it moved out of range.

Well I thought I would be more hidden than sitting in chair/stool on the ground. I do not care to shoot a bow off my butt or knees (might get tired of waiting on the turkey to give up a good shot).

I was going to do this to be more hidden not more out in the open. I have a better chance to take a deer out of the tree so I thought it might be the same with turkeys. If I was hunting with a shotgun I am fine on the ground.

Hunting from above can be very difficult for Turkey.

Remember a Turkey grows up learning to spot danger from above. In fact, when they are poults... it's the Owl and the Hawk that can become their worst predators so the Turkey never seems to forget this.

I've shot a few Fall turkey from deer stands but generally it's a LOT more difficult to get away with ANY movement from a treestand with a Turkey within range.

Good luck

Well thanks for the advice I believe I will stick to the ground and just be well concealed. I am sure it will be difficult so well see if I make it through the year with just the bow.

You will not believe this but one fall mourning I was deer hunting in a new tree stand spot when turkey droppings started falling all around me. Yes, they let me climb right up the tree they were in and sit for a good half hour before first light. Yes I did get even!
