Turkey Hunting Whether it's spring or fall doesn't matter to this bunch. Great tips on calling, bustin flocks, using blinds and more.

Hello welcome to the board i myself am kinda new too but from what i can tell you so far these guys on here are the best and are always willing to give advice or in my case teach me something. To answer your question i tend to let the other birds around me dictate how much im gonna call. If i hear a gobble before flydown i will do a soft tree yelp and then a short series of puts and if i get a gobble i will shut up because he already knows where im at. Hope this helped

I tend to call very conservatively as well. Soft tree yelps early on---and then mainly some clucks and purrs. I rarely hear hens calling a lot (yelping, etc) in my area---so I don' t either. When I have heard the hens cutting up---I mimic then even louder and they tend to come my way.

I have seen plenty of videos and hunting shows where the hunter is calling a lot all the time. That just hasn' t paid off for me.

Nothing works ALL the time....but here' s a trick you might want to try and if it works for you, you are in for an exciting hunt.

Try cutting off his gobble with excited yelps. Sometimes this will make him double and triple gobble...cut him off EVERY time before he finishes gobbling. When he quits...YOU quit...if there are no other hens around GET READY! Even if there are other hens around they may come in to check you out....bringing " you know who" tagging right along.

I have gotten into some HEATED calling sessions with hens as well doing this...and this drives the gobbler(s) NUTS!

Like I said, nothing works all the time....there have been times this did not work but it was fun and very exciting all the same...when it does work, you will be in for a memorable, successful hunt.

I' ve heard of hunters speaking of " taking the tom' s temperature" which simply means " how HOT" is he? If he' s gobbling his brains out (I' ve always loved that expression)....he' s probably HOT and very susceptible to calling. Other times it seems like they are just gobbling for the hell of it and really aren' t interested in anything but making a lot of noise--usually moving in a direction away from you
(he may be " call shy" meaning he has been called to by many hunters...and that makes for a very tough bird to hunt. You may then have to set up decoys in the area that he frequents---he' s going to want to SEE the " ladies" appearing to make the calls.

Good luck to YOU

On average I dont call alot. If I have a gobbler heated up I will cutt and yelp and keep him coming and then shutoff until he approaches to within 60 yards. Then I will usually purr and cluck softly a few times and wait for him to come in for the kill. I have had better luck in the past by calling sparingly. Especially on heavily hunted birds.

Hey, i think just about everybody calls too much when they first begin, or at least all my friends do. But sometimes that can pay off too... But be sparing with your calls, if you sound too excited, then that tom may want you to come to him (the natural thing with turkeys). You have to reverse nature, and make the tom want to come to you. Play hard to get, but as some here have stated, that if you have a really hot tom, the more you call the faster he will come. As a general rule though, i wouldn' t call too much, yelp a few times, then wait 20-30 minutes sitting at that same place, it worked for me this season, all though i know it is hard when you first get started cause you are ready for action, but patience has been the key to success for me while turkey hunting.

i agree....call just enough to let him know your there and get him a bit excited if he hangs up.....i called about a few series every 20 mins or so for an hour when i got my bird this year....i didnt hear him gobble until he was about 75yds out....then i hit the call to let him know i was still there and to let him know i was excited about him being there and he gobbled again and the rest is history....it all depends on the situation but generally call just enough to let him know your there and waiting....good luck.....welcome aboard.....stick around you can learn alot read and tell stories and help people out with things you do know about....great bunch of guys....i havent seen a bad egg on here in a while now
