Default Newbie just wanted to say Hi and tell about my weekend!

Hello everone i had just recently found this messege board and have been reading the posts that people have placed. I would just like to say that i have learned more from you guys in a few short weeks than i have in the 3 years i have been turkey hunting. (still no bird). You guys really know alot and its nice that there is a place i can go when i have ?' s. This year was actually closest i have been to getting a turkey. I had set up on a flat and right a daylight 3 birds gobbled around me. well there was a rooster off in a distance that wd call and when he wd the gobblers wd fire off back. well i started calling softly with tree yelps and got responces. But i dont know if they gobbled at me or the rooster so after i got responce i shut up. so as to not call so much because one was really close. Well needless to say i didnt say any of the three they had lock jaw right at daylight. my question is what did i do wrong ? Not aggressive enough? I still cant figure it out any help wd be greatly appreciated.

Rob

Welcome aboard!! Experienece will always be your best teacher!! Try out some calls and see what happens. Movement is the key, keep it to a minimun. One way is to watch some turkey hunting video' s, this way you' ll get a feeling on how and when to call.

welcome.my first year produced a bird this year and these people had alot to do with it.you have decades of veteran turkey hunting advice here.i learned never to give up,movement or lack of is key, practice your calling, even practiced setting up in my backyard with decoys over and over.keep your gear organized,if you have to set up quick,it seems it can make the difference, since movement and sound is crucial.call sparingly to roosted birds.and most of all,be confident, enjoy your days in the woods, learn from your mistakes and not harvesting a bird is by no means a failure.good luck.

Lil,a big welcome here also!Doesn' t sound you did much wrong, but what it does sound like is your gobblers may be henned up!In that case youy probably didn' t get aggressive enough! When your set-up on those roosted gobblers listen not only to the gobbling but also for any other turkey activity also, such as a hens soft tree yelps and the # of birds that fly-down(hearing wingbeats)! If they have hens an aggressive approach in your calling may work far better than a passive approach!Good luck!Bob
