After having no AM action at our hunting club we decided to go to my family farm. 5 minutes on the land, we spotted some birds moving our way. We quickly setup and made soft calls to lure them in. Both of us had birds in our sights and I began to count off 1, 2, 3. My buddy however just yelled GO and shot one of the birds. Needless to say, we neglected to communicate our shoot signal. LOL!! He put his bird down and the flock dispersed. After laughing and recovering the bird, we decided to stay put and try to call the birds back. Less than an hour later, we called back a single tom. He strutted all the way in but never made a sound. At one point, I leaned to my bud and said " you gonna let me shoot this time?" hehe. We had set up my buddies bird over a stick like a decoy and it worked great! The tom beelined for the " decoy" and I got him at less than 20 yards.
It was 9am but we stayed all morning and managed to call in two more really young jakes. Both jakes nearly ran us over. Later, I paced the distance for one of the birds at 4 steps! Just to cap off a great morning, we also had a few curious deer come in. I can' t think of a single opening day that I' ve had so much fun!
