So I finally bagged my first bird this morning. I scouted out an area yesterday afternoon and saw 2 longbeards and a few jakes, so I was pretty confident they were in the area. I also found a likely roosting spot (big tall pine plantation w/ lots of wing feathers on the ground). Me and a good friend and experienced turkey hunter were in the woods by 5:15 and they were already gobbling. There was one tom in the area I found the day before and we set up on him. He finally flew down and of course worked his way away from us towards and over a ridge. We saw a hen and a jake but the tom wasn't moving, so we moved to him. My buddy called and gobbled to the tom and he was holding tight on the bottom of the ridge, so we set up in the pines above the ridge, about 25 yards from the edge. We were able to coerce him up to the edge and he came to the top and strutted and gobbled a bit for us beforeĀ*I was able to put the hammer down on him at 7:00. We paced it off at 26 yards, he dropped in his tracks and at first we thought I missed because he went down so quick and was over the edge so we couldn't see him, no flapping at all. He's a good 2 year old bird, about 20#, 10" beard, and 3/4" and 7/8" spurs. I couldn't be happier. The best part is we got the whole thing on video, minus the final kill shot because the angle was blocked by a tree for my camera guy and amazing friend/guide. I'll get pictures up here as soon as I can. Good luck to those of you who still have tags!
Here are a few pictures of me with the bird. That's a Rem 870 by my side, I've now taken my first turkey and duck with that gun and totally love it to death!
