well this year i shot a double bearded gobbler on opening day at 53 steps with hevi shot #5s my dad also shot one at 45yards out of the air so just thought you guys might whant to try it
I hunt with hevi-shot #6's too because they pattern the best in my gun. I use a 20 gauge though so 35 yards is my max distance that I will shoot. For me though, it's all about bringing them in close. Only 2 birds that I have shot have been at the 30-35 yard range. All the rest have been 25 yards or closer.
Oh Hevi-Shot, how good it's been to me since I've been using it
These are my last 3 turkeys, all shot since switching to Hevi-Shot. My little brothers also shot 2 with it, one at around 10 yards, the other around 40. My old man's killed 5 or 6 with Hevi-Shotsince we made the switch 4 or 5 years back. As long as you find the right choke/load combo, you should be golden. I also use 3" #5's.
I love the stuff, and have been a big fan for the last three seasons. If it weren't so darn expensive I'da used it more on geese and ducks.
Anyone ever use their .223 on a varmit?
