Default Nitro 4x5x7' s question.

I have patterned some nitro hevi-shot in a 4x5x7 and to say the least I was very impressed, but I' m a little skeptical about having so many #7 shot in my load, I know they are heavier than a normal 7 shot and you will put more in the turkey' s kill zone but whats your opinion, do they pack enough punch to kill one out to 40 or 50 yards like a #4 or #5 shot will.

I am going to shoot the same shot combination in my Xtrema this spring. From all the information that I have seen, the #7 heavi-shot will carry about the same foot pounds of energy as about a #5.5 lead. I have hunted turkeys for over 20 years and until this load I only shot #6 shot. I have only had one turkey that I know I hit get away, and I have never gotten over it. I simply misjudged how far he was. The only other two turkeys that I shot at, and didn' t get, went away laughing, I' m sure I didn' t even cut a feather. The moral of the story is; I am hunting with a load that carries a heavier impact at all ranges and patterns better than anything I have ever shot or seen, how can I complain?

Maytom, I bet you will be satisfied with the pattern they give, It suprised me, the real improvement was the overall pattern, it was about a foot smaller than the others at 40 yards.

I wouldn' t worry about the #7 not doing the job. Federal makes a copper plated 7 1/2 turkey load that I tried out. They penetrated a piece of plywood way deeper than any other shot size at 45 yds. If I could get them to pattern I wouldn' t use anything else, and if the nitros have more energy than led, LOOK OUT TOM.

There seems to be a misconception about hevi-shot verses lead. Heavy-shot does not deliver more energy then lead in a larger shot size. It does deliver more energy, about 3 times that of steel shot. Number 6 heavy shot delivers a little more energy then #6 lead but not even close to # 5 lead.Check this Link to Remingtons site. I just want to make sure no-one takes a marginal shot thinking they have more killing power than they actually do.

Hooks
If you look at the table that shows the retained energy of lead vs. hevi shot you will see that hevi shot #6 has 2 foot lbs. of energy @ 40 yards compared to 2.2 at 40 yds for the lead 5' s, which makes it very close. I think a comparison to a #5.5 shot is possibly a little conservative.

gblrklr - I am not sure if we are looking at the same table, but lead #5' s have 2.8 foot pounds of energy at 40 yards and Hevi-Shot #6' s have 2.5 foot pounds.

The minimum foot pounds of energy needed to kill a turkey (according to T&TH mag) is 2.6, so Hevi-Shot 6' s would be marginal at 40 yards.
