Turkey Hunting Whether it's spring or fall doesn't matter to this bunch. Great tips on calling, bustin flocks, using blinds and more.

Default Went out patterning my Remington 870 12GA (one more time)..

I was at the range at the WMA here in Virginia earlier today. I went to double check the pattern with some Winchester Supreme HV 3" magnum #5' s. My lefty Remington 870 Express has some Tru-Glo trupoint clip-on turkey sights on it, and a Star-dot X-Full ported choke tube.

Anyway, due to people already there skeet shooting, I couldn' t spread out or get out very far on the side edge of the skeet range, so I was only about 25 yards (paced off by foot).

Well, at 25 yards with my 870 12GA, the Winchester Supreme HV #5' s, patterned incredible at such close range. I counted 44 pellets in the red bullseye on the turkey target. On the whole turkey image itself there' s (I think - I might have lost count) about 115 pellets.

Man, if I EVER get the chance to call a gobbler in that close, I know he' s gonna be a dead turkey!!

Sounds like you have a great combo going there!! You should check your pattern out to 35 yards as well. That winchester shell your using is one of my favoritres too!!

Butch, I shoot an 870 with the same Win. load you are using and I can vouch for the fact that it is an awesome combo. I have patterned mine out to 40 yds. with a Kick' s .665 choke. I have 2 pieces of pallet cardboard which I shot @ 40 yds. last spring. One of them has only 24 pellets outside the 30" ring and the other has only 14 outside the 30" ring. That is way up in the 90% range for pellets inside a 30" circle @ 40 yds.! The 20-30 yd. shots, which is the range I shoot at turkeys the most, are unbelievably dense. No need to look any further for a lethal turkey combo. Butch, hope you get a biggun' this spring with your setup!

I just love reading stories about Remington turkey guns just tearing up a turkey target!!!!!!! I' ll bet you could take the choke out of one and still kill turkeys out to 40 yards.... Just kidding

O.K. Mr. Longbeard, I have another " Big R" story for ya.........and you too Butch.....I almost shot without a choke....

Shot my 870 this weekend with my brand new Tru-Glo choke. But......before I even opened it up, just out of curiosity, I fired my first couple rounds (1 5/8 Hevi-shot, #6) at 30 yds. out of my factory Modified choke. 25 hits in the kill zone area on a Primos target. Not to shabby, pretty good for a 30 yard woods gun I think. Then, in went the tru-glo, and $60 and one trigger pull later, 52 hits at 30 yards. Now were talkin turkey dinner. At 40 I got around 20 hits, but since that choke is rated for #4 or #5 shot, my next batch of shells will be one of those. So fire that baby up at 40 yards Butch and tell us what she does!

Mikey S. I also have the Tru Glo choke in my Remington and got the same results you got at 40 yards. I think i will be trying my gun with the factory full just to see if the Hevi Shot patterns any better.

One more thing Mr. Longbeard.... I measured the inside of my modified choke tube with a dial caliper, and averaged somewhere around .710" . From what I have seen most hevi-shot tubes have a constriction of .675 I think, so the factory full may be closer to that size.....??
