Turkey Hunting Whether it's spring or fall doesn't matter to this bunch. Great tips on calling, bustin flocks, using blinds and more.

Default Red-Dot scope guys.....

Hey scope users, I have a few questions for ya..........I' m considering a scope for my 870, right now the Burris Speeddot is the frontrunner. My questions:

1. How do the red dot scopes behave in wet weather? Any problems with them not operating properly? Do they handle recoil of a 3" mag pretty well?

2. I' m also undecided on how to mount it to the gun: cantilever, saddle mount(B-square, remington saddle mount) or having the receiver drilled and tapped. Any drawbacks to any of the above mentioned mounts? My gun does not have a cantilever on it now, only a vent rib, so I' m wondering if this is even an option for me right now. I assume a cantilever mounts to the rib, but I' m unaware of any aftermarket cantilever mounts. Any thoughts?

Thanks guys..
Mikey

Mikey, I don' t have a red dot on my gun but I do have a variable scope. My gun is an 870 like yours, with just a vent rib. I took my gun to a good gunsmith and had it drilled and tapped and put a Weaver base made for a Remington autoloader rifle on it. This is a much better and cleaner setup than saddle mounts and cantilever mounts. Top this off with a red dot or a scope and you have a turkey' s worst nightmare!!

I have a couple Bushnell HOLO Sights. I can' t speak to the others, but it has never had a problem with wet weather. Plus, it is rated to be mounted on shotguns, handguns, or rifles. It will handle the recoil from even a 3 1/2" mag with no problem (and I have proven that ).

Personally, I wouldn' t consider using any mounting system other than a saddle mount. The reason is simple. When I first started using my HOLO Sight, I mounted it on a standard mount on my drilled and tapped Mossberg. I also made the mistake of installing the batteries that came with the sight from the factory. Needless to say, they died about half way through my second hunt. (No telling how old they really were having been packaged with the unit). Anyway, I actually had to call it a day as I no longer had any way of aiming my gun!

Unlike standard drilled and tapped or cantilever mounts, B-Square and Millet saddle mounts have a " see through" design that allows you to still use your bead(s) or fiber optic sights if something happens to the scope. It' s the only way to go, IMO. I have a saddle mount on an 870 and an 835 despite the 835 being drilled and tapped already. I won' t take the chance of being without a gun if anything ever happens to my HOLOSight, and you might want to consider the same with whatever scope you purchase.

Good luck this spring!

Thanks for the advice guys. I have to admit........I' m torn now......... I just read some past posts about concerning comparisons between dots and crosshairs scopes, and it seems most guys on here prefer the regular scope with the added magnification over the red-dots and no magnification. I figured a red-would suit me better because I' ll admit, call me a wimp, I don' t care, I' m a little recoil wary with a scope on a gun that has a decent amount of recoil - unlimited eye relief would seem easier to shoot for me............but then again, a 2x or 3x crosshair lined up on a birds neck at 40 yards...........decisions, decisions. ..........

I' m glad Stacy came along and posted!

Aimpoint makes a few different models of their red dot scopes with 2x magnification. That might just be your answer, Mikey.

Aimpoint' s are every bit as expensive as a HOLO Sight (if not more so) though. You have been warned!

You can check them out and even buy them at www.pennswoods.com now.
