I like oak with a corn cob resonator. Has a good feel and makes a nice crisp sound....IMO of course.

All good responses above. Each wood is going to give you a differnt' sound so alot of times it' s personel prefence. I just made two black walnut strikers about a month ago, and thier my first. Great sound and look very nice. Hickory is about the best all around striker in my opion. Good weight, good bite. My own personel favorite though is Rosewood. LOL. If you have access to any kind of wood then I guess your decison could be a hard one

If he' s making pens he' s probably got some of the laminated Diamondwood or Actionwood. I hear this makes an EXCELLENT striker.

why not get him to teach you to use the lathe and you make your own deisgns and experiment all you want.....thats the way to get the sound you want...i personally love black walnut from what ive used so far...i got some apple drying i need to start on soon.maybe tomarow..and i will take some red oak (think its red..its reddish..lol) from wood shop tomarow is i can find nice scrap pieces...i use a pocket knife to make mine!!! cant make one piece and make fancy ones but they sound sweeter than factory ones.....experiment..try to learn the lathe if oyur uncle would let you...theres tons of woods that will work...
