Well i' m no Lovett Williams but i think it has something to do with the length of day light that we get in the spring

Have to agree because I`ve seen early birds gobbling in the middle of March with snow on the ground and it snowing hard.

My assumption has always been that they start gobbling because of the days getting longer and the weather getting warmer, just the opposite of when the bucks start to rut...shorter and cooler days.

I agree,longer days puts them in the need to breed!!!But also with that said you could add things like the losing of a hen,shock responses,and an expression of dominance to all others this is my turf!!!

I also agree, ive heard from numerouse books and magizines that gobblers start gobblin when the days start to get longer.

there are a few things that trigger gobbling activity in the spring. of course one is the weather as any turkey hunter cann attest to turkeys usually gobble better on still warm days, when there is a high pressure system in the area. but the main thing that triggers gobbling activity is the increased length of daylight in the spring which increases melanin production in turkeys signaling a marked increase in gobbling.
