Turkey Hunting Whether it's spring or fall doesn't matter to this bunch. Great tips on calling, bustin flocks, using blinds and more.

Default Easy to learn/use calls?

I am trying my hand at turkey for the first time this year (I just found out the wife was cool with it-it was her idea) and I am looking for an easy, no hassle call that can be reasonably learned by a beginner such as myself. I have about 4 weeks to get adequate. I know I won' t be good for a few years but I will settle for adequate for now. Also will #2 or #4 shot with a 20ga full choke be enough? Any and all suggestions are GREATLY appreciated.

P.S. Preferably one that is available at Bass Pro. They' re the only place close to me that has any selection. Thanks again!

A push pull is about the best to get at in a short time- bass pro sells several brands such as Quaker Boy, Knight & Hale, and Primos.

Are you talking about one of the plunger type calls?

a great beginner call to purchase and use is the Knight & Hale ol Yeller Sla-tek a great pot type friction call. it is very hard to mak a mistake with this call. It is one of my favorites. It is very affordable under $20 if I remember correctly and comes with 2 strikers. You' ll love it if you buy it. And watch out this wonderful sport of turkey hunting is addicting, your wife might regret suggesting you take it up.

I call that i would highly reccomend is the Knight and Hale Lonsome hen pusbutton call. Ive used it with great success calling in a few nice birds last season with this call alone. Its easy to use and a good price at $13.00 check it out at www.bassproshops.com

These hunters on this site helped me pick out a slate call last week and within 10 mins. of being home with it I could make decent yelps, soft as well as agressive, purrs and things like this. So if you want something fast and easy, this slate call may fit the bill. I can' t wait to try it this hunting season.

I had never used a slate call prior to this. It' s a H. & S. Strut with a carbon striker. It sounds great. Hope this helps. elknut1

I' ve never used the push/pull calls but have played with the Lonesome hen and it sounds pretty good. Myself I prefer a slate type call. The Knight & Hale Ol' Yeller is one of the easiest calls to use and maintain. It also sounds very good. Just my .02

Outstanding! One other question. Do I need a decoy or can I do this without one?

You don' t need a decoy. They come in handy every now and then but I usally carry mine without using them.

i will back up both the ol yeller and the lonesome hen..i have the ol yeller..works great...but the lonesome hen is way simpler...theres nothing to pushing a pin a few times...and it sounds pretty good for a push button call...i never used a decoy(never shot a turkey either but i made all the right choices on passing the many shots i had)..a decoy would been nice a few times and fooled the bird to come out of the brush he was behind but hey..thats hunting...if you hunt fields they will really make life easy bringing the bird in to range...and as for shot sixe...it all depends on what your pattern looks like...turkey hunting is my favorite and ive hunted alot of game..just about everything in PA except bear and elk and predators...once you get a bird to gobble to your call your will get the feeling that gets you HOOKED...youll never want to do anything else but turkey hunt...i cant wake up on time for school at 7am but i can be up and dressed and ready to hunt at 3am..ive done it way more than once...we drove for an hour and a half every morning and walked near 2 miles to our spot...thats how much i love turkey hunting!
