So ive been watching about 5 toms the last couple of days and the area where i hunt is mainly feilds. there are 3 different little plots of woods on the mile by mile square i hunt there about 15 acres a peice and thats the biggest one and one is only about 3-4 acreas. anyways the fly down to either this to the huge plowed feild and strut and gobble for a while or head to a feild that is a horse pasture that is a little overgrown with weeds and grass now about 4-8 high. seeing how its suppose to thunderstorm tonight and tommrow mourn, my question is it a good assuption to head to the horse pasture area and set up thinking they wont want too sludge around in the mud feild, if the have a grass area to go to? ive never really hunted turkeys during the rain/thunderstorms normally wait till better weather, but with my work/school schudele i only have 2 out of my 5 days to hunt so need to make it count no matter the weather. any help??
I have always been told that they gobble like crazy in thunderstorms, as far as rain goes hunt where there is the least amount of undergrowth. They dont like to be walking through or touching wet brush. I would not necessarily set up on the feild first thing but I would defiently stay close and keep it in mind if you are not hearing anything from their usual places.
I would suspect that they would rather have muddy feet than try and fool with that wet/tall grass. I've killed some gobblers in some awfully muddy fields.
