Default burnt striker tips

has anyone burnt the tip of their strikers? last week i seen a guy on michigan outdoors with a striker that was burnt and it sounded great, so i tried it on one of my strikers that was getting old. i tried it and it worked like a dream, the striker was a rosewood hs striker with a ash bell, does anyone else know if this will work with any of my other strikers (purpleheart, hickory, ash, walnut, black walnut, birch) or will it ruin them.
