Turkey Hunting Whether it's spring or fall doesn't matter to this bunch. Great tips on calling, bustin flocks, using blinds and more.

Default How far will Eastern Tom's travel??

I'm looking for information on how far of a range do Eastern Tom's travel. I'm in upstate NY, mostly wooded countryside. A few scattered old farms here & there, but not many. Reason asking is 2wks ago I seen 3 nice toms traveling together about 2 miles down the road from my house.1 wk ago I seen what I believe to be the same 3 toms just a few yards down from the wk before. Now this morning I see 3 toms again together, same size beards across the road from my house. If its the same 3 toms they've traveled across good size stream, around a 3 acre pond, and up & down several hills to get through the woods by my house. Of course unless the silly things walked the edge of the road the full 2 miles or so to get up here!!

In Wisconsin, they have used radiotransmitters and found some turkeys were harvested over 15 miles from where they were originally captured.

One bird went 5.8 miles in a 30-hour period, but most stayed close to the capture site.

One other thing I read. They also studied mortaility of those turkeys and here is what they found:

55% killed by hunters
6% killed by coyotes
3% killed by poaching (they think - could not be verified)
2% killed by cars

I've heard before that turkeys average around 6 miles a day.

221 toms and 26 jakes were tracked so far since 2005. They are tracking 75 turkeys this spring.

I hear there are lots of turkeys at NSWC/DD. Most don't have feathers tho...

Sling

That is some great information - thanks for sharing

I suspected they traveled quite a ways. It also helps explain how turkeys have populated my state (Tennessee) in such a relatively short period since being captured and released in multiple sites.
