Turkey Hunting Whether it's spring or fall doesn't matter to this bunch. Great tips on calling, bustin flocks, using blinds and more.

Default Help me choose a turkey choke

First of all my gun is a remington 11-87 special purpose topped with a turkey scope. I am using a kicks gobblin thunder right now but am considering trying hevi shot. I know that I can't shoot this through the kicks and was looking for advice on a good one that does. The price doesn't matter as long as I get good patterns and extended range. I have notcied the primos jellyhead shoots both lead and hevi shot. Is this a good one? Please give me some feedback on what chokes you are using, what kind of patterns you get at longer distances, and suggestions on shells and shot size. I don't want to spend a fortune expermenting with shells. Your help would be appreciated. Thanks to all.

I have a jellyhead in a Rem 870 SPS-T with thumbhole and I get around 120 to 130 pellets in a 10" circle from 40 yards away. Also get the same results with a Tru Glo Strutt Stopper Xtreme, however the SSX seems to be a little more even spread.

I have read over on the NWTF forums where guys are getting well over 200 pellets hits in a 10" circle from 40 yards away using an Indian Creek choke and the Hevi-13 3" #6 shot shotshells. They are very specific on stating that they are using the bronze shells and not the green shells from last year. I got a box of the green shells over a year ago and the patterns are terrible with them.

The Jellyhead is a good choke...and if you ever decide to jump on the Nitro bandwagon, the Jellyhead is a very popular choke when shooting those shells. I have been very happy with my Jellyhead...

BHunter
I've killed 23 turkeys with a KICKS GT 680 on my 10 gauge. They are not hevi shot compatiable. I have a Jelly Head on the way. We'll see how that one does. The Rhino has good things said about it. Also have some Nitro hevishot 4x6x7 on the way. Good luck

I use the Jellyhead. I'm happy with it, but I've talked to some people who say they can't get the pattern they want with a Remington using the jellyhead. I shoot the 870 SPS-T 3 1/2 thumbhole. The Rem. Wingmaster HD's pattern better in my gun than the Rem. hevi shots and the hevi 13's. The hevi 13's perform terrible in my setup. I like a little more open pattern. That is why I use the jellyhead. If you want to put 200 pellets or more in a 10 inch circle at 40 yards, then don't go with the jellyhead. It's not designed to shoot a real tight pattern. If you are happy with 90 to 130 hits in a 10 inch circle at 40 yards, which is plenty enough to kill any turkey, then go with the jellyhead. You may even get more than 130 hits. Just remember, it's not all about really tight patterns.

There are a ton of posts here dealing with this subject - might I suggest using the search button above.

The long thread below titled "Hevishot - is it really that amazing" has pages of choke/shell combinations.

Just bought a Jellyhead yesterday myself, waiting to pattern it. Im with you man, I dont want to spend a fortune trying a whole bunch of different shells. You dont have to find magic to kill a turkey.

As mentioned in a post above, the Black Diamond Strike choke tube from Indian Creek is getting rave reviews from everyone who tries one! I can personally attest to the amazing groups that it will fire through a Benelli SBE II and a T/C Encore Pro Hunter, especially with the outstanding Hevi-13 loads! I'm personally getting over 100 pellets in the head and neck at 40 yards.

Here's a link to one of the places you can find the World Record setting choke tube

Good luck and good shootin'

I just bought a jelly head for my 835. My gun wasn't patterning that well at all with lead, but with that jelly head and 3.5" Hevi-13 #6sI put 165 pellets in a 10" circle at 40 yards. Same choke put 102 pellets of Hevi-13 3" #6s in a 10" circle at 40. Jelly heads are mid priced chokes. If you want expensive, try a Rhino or Indian Creek. Probably wont see much of a performance increase, but who knows? Every gun/choke/load combo shoots different.

"Help me choose a turkey choke"

Choosing is easy. Get the one that works best with the gun, shell, combination can only be done through experimenting. I have chosen two so far for my Browning....a Primos Jelly Head and a Truglo and neither works as well as my factory Browning choke...

Another vote for the jelly head, or the Rhino chokes.
