well tomorrow is opener for us in CA. Im heading out to a dairy that has alot of birds on it. I have not had a chhance to scout but we've always seen birds in this one feild. I plan on setting up on the edge of the feild and do some light calling, im debateing on putting out a deacoy or not. Also do birds patterns change after a day of rain? we had rain today but just clouds and wind tomorrow.
thaank you for your help

I plan on hunting the field this year as well, since I don't have access to the woods. I'm using a pop-up blind placed about 10yds from the fence and will put my decoys 40yds from the fence behind me and to my right. In past years the turkeys would often hang up and not want to cross the fence. By putting the dekes farther away they may step across the fence line.
this last spring i tried putting my blind about 60 yds out in a cornfield, in the wide open. i put it in 2 days before the hunt. The night before opening morning there were 3 gobblers in the field. they roosted rite there, but in the morning they flew down and gobbled like crazy but didnt want anything to do with out calling or the decoys we had out. Im guessing its not a good idea to put your blind in the open like that?
i never really had a gobbler not want to cross a fence, but little ditches and streams were a problem for me where i am hunting.

well we went out today, me and my brother-in-law went to the feild where we alsways see turkeys, but guess what, no turkeys, we stayed and called untill 3 hours after daylight(an hour after the fog broke) when we got shorted by another couple hunters, we went back to the truck and for the rest of the day the only birds we heard were working my mom, at noon she took down a 21lbs 8"beard, 1"spurs(both) for a nice 57 point bird

I havnt noticed a change in turkey patttern after the rain.Maybee a good time to hear gobbling.and a good time to look for fresh turkey tracks ?
During the rain you can see them in more open areas,as to be able to get away from the loud rain in the leaves and into a area where their vision is used more.
Best tip is to sound like a lonely hen looking for a tom, call relisticly, try to mock REAL hen calls you heard.listen to hens more than gobblers, hens have a more audible wider range of vocabulary in the spring.Dont get too close to a hot gobbler.Get where he wants to go.Dont ever let the gobbler pinpoint your location.keep him confused into thinking the hen is moving around or getting farther away.turkeys can see you blink and breathe..keep these to a minimum!!Stay close to trees wider than you, cleaning your silhouette from the sky.If a gobbler is with hens, set up where the hens look like they are going, try to take a detour through the woods and cut out in front of them a couple hundred yards.Gobblers act diffrently to hens in difrent locations. You may work a gobbler to death and he wont come to you.but then change your location, and he cant wait to get to you.Try diffrent calls to see how the gobblers respond to them,, Air blown,Box,or slate call.Afternoons are very good to catch a hot gobbler alone and solitary.and comes into caller with ease.
all i can think of right now. GOOD LUCK Hunt safley, and RESPECT wildlife and conserve our Wild turkey population.Hunt more with your eyes instead of your gun.I put meat on the table, then spend the majority of the season calling in birds for freinds and then just calling in birds to watch them.
well today i went out again, me and my brother in law turned a corner well wandering around the property and there was one at 20 yards, i saw the 9 1/4" beard and just said "Take it." weighed about 23lbs and had 3/4"spurs, next week hopefully will be my turn, i just knew there are some big ones on the property i hunt

thats not hunting....never shoot a bird you just walk up on..if everyone did that there would be no turkeys to hunt..
Thank God they dont allow Spring turkey rifle season in oklahoma..if they did the population would drop to nothing in a week, thanks to people with poor hunting ethics.
