I am getting all my stuff ready for the first day of spring gobbler season and was wondering if a turkey uses his sense of smell as much as they do their sight and hearing. My decoys have been stored in my barn, with smells of gasoline, etc.
Like nearly all birds their sense of smell isn't very acute. My turkey hunting mentor told me many years that if a turkey had a sense of smell you couldn't kill 'em.
You decoys are OK but you might want to get them out and wash the dust them off them anyway.

I'd clean them up just so you don't get the rest of your hunting clothes, hands, truck, etc. all smelling like gas. I don't think it would bother the turkeys much however...as Mouthcaller said "if they could smell you'd never kill one". The only thing I would be worried about would be if you had a nice bird coming in and a deer showed up, and caught wind of your dekes, and snorted and spooked, in turn spooking the bird.
No you definetly dont have to worry about how you smell. Ive heard of some people killing their scent that way if a deerwont smell them and alert the turkeys. I laugh at that.
