Turkey Hunting Whether it's spring or fall doesn't matter to this bunch. Great tips on calling, bustin flocks, using blinds and more.

I have a Mossberg 835, 3 1/2 Ulti_mag, exclusively for turkey! Worked good for me, and I wil stick with. My only suggestion is that you go to the gun store and look at the Mossberg, and the Rem. 870, or all of them, and find one that fits you and you feel comfortable. Any gun that harvests the turkey is good!

Is the 3 1/2 chamber a good idea to get or is it unnecessary?

Unless you just have to shoot 3.5 in shells, I would go with a 3" model. I had the 870 express mag 3.5 and they are a fine gun but a lot of extra weight to lug around the woods. I also had a little problem when shooting 2 3/4" shells as they wanted to hang up unless I pumped the gun REAL hard. I chose a Winchester black shadow (with some GREAT help on this site) and I think it will fill my needs for a turkey gun and small game getter with a choke change. Don

Agree with DoninVA, if you don' t need 3 1/2 that is not a must!

The 3 1/2 in chamber is not a bad way to go. You can shoot 3 or 2 3/4' s from it, but if you ever need something bigger, for turkeys, ducks, geese or whatever, you can always shoot 3 1/2' s. It' s not a bad idea to go ahead and get it. For turkeys, I use 3 inch shells. Turkey loads pack some punch no matter what size they are. But some people are firm believers in " it' s better to have too much than not enough." Try the 835 and 870, it seems to be what most people use for their turkey guns. I tend to like the 870 better, the Mossberg makes me feel like I' m holding a fence post. Choose which ones best for you, each of them will work wonders on turkeys and run about the same price I believe. Good luck choosing!

Winchester 1300. Try getting a nice short barrell for it too. No need for the 3.5 inch. More turkeys have died by a 3 inch shell than 3.5' s to date.

The 3 1/2 are not a necessity. A 3" gun will meet your needs for just about anything. Get something with interchangable tubes and you' re ready to go. We use 2 Winchester 1300s and a Rem 870 in 20 guage. They all will do the job.
