I'm gonna be faced with 20-25 mph winds and rain tomorrow here in Alabama. From my experience birds usually fly down a little later and head to open areas withbetter visibility. Like rain, wind prevents turkeys from hearing too well in the woods, so they prefer more open areas likefood plots, power lines, cutovers, or maybe creek bottoms. What state you hunting?

I feel your pain. It's gonna be less than perfect conditions for the season opener here in Alabama. I just checked my camera...no birds since Sunday. However, I did notice that last Saturday which was even more windy than tomorrow is supposed to be, that birds still come to the fields, later in the morning and earlier in the evening than normal.

My past experience has proven that wind makes it harder, but not impossible. Use a higher pitch call, like a glass pot or loud box.

I killed a 19 pounder last year in 25 to 30 mph winds. It was a bad day to hunt, but I went anyway. The biggest problem that day for me was to tell which direction the gobbling came from. Fortunately he was close when I started my calling. If he is not close by, you probably won't hear him and you could spook him without ever knowing he was there.I usually can't stand hunting really windy days, but this is turkey hunting and I'm going anyway.

Windy days are when knowing your birds can be the difference between success and failure. I'm half deaf from duck hunting, even being young as I am... twenty years worth of triple misses will do that to you. On windy days, I park it. I try and stay out of the wind because its been my experience that turkeys try to stay out of the wind too. If it is dry and sunny, they will usually go out to the fields late morning.

As posted, loud calls, boxes and crystal pots.

On windy days or rainy days, I normally stay around the open fields. Wind blowing through all the trees makes so much noise and destroys one of the turkeys best defenses...their ability to hear. I have found that they move out into the open fields and rely on their other best defense...their ability to see.

windy days are when a solid ground blind are worth their weight in gold for sitting tight and waitin them out.
