Default What would you do ?

Your hunting public land and you know the land very well!!!! You drop down off a ridge were you know turkey are, and you hear a gobbler. The gobbler is gobbling his head off over on another mountain. The mountain is very steap and rocky and you know the bird is not going to cross the ravine and come over to you, unless he flys across. You go down to the bottom and scale the other mountain to try and set up on the bird and you hear another hunter back were you just came from calling to the turkey and every time he calls the bird gobbles. Buy the time you realize that there is another hunter trying to work this bird, you are arounf 75 to 100 yards away from turkey and in very good position to kill this gobbler!!! What would you do?

To be honest with ya i am pretty sure this guy was working this bird before i got there. I just couldn't hear him working the bird while we were on the same side of the mountain. But after i crossed the mountain and got on the other side i could hear him then. I have been hunting this area for a few years and i always go to this spot to listen for gobblers and i always hear them in this same area(across the mountain). I sat there for about 30 min trying to pin point him from his gobbles and i never heard the other hunter. To make a long story short i ended up bagging the gobbler 19lb 10.5in beard and 1 1/8in hooks...

I kinda felt bad for the other guy. Because as soon as he heard another hunter over there working this bird he really started to pour on the calling trying his best to try and get this bird to come to him. I just put a heavy dose of silence on him and went up side his head with a load of Rem Hevi shot at about 15 yards. Ouch!!!!!

Needless to say after the shot it got real quiet on the other mountain..

I agree with the guys also!Mr.Longbeard not trying to be a smarta$$,but if you know the birds are roosting over on the mountain why are you waiting to cross over there instead of starting where the birds are at?Maybe afraid of bumping into one??

id hunt it..whoever he goes to gets the bird..nothing can change that...i hate public state game lands..we walk 2 miles into the woods and usually get screwd by another hunter..first day one year we have a longbeard coming in..50yds away..he rounds a bend on a trail and hes within 40 and hes good as mine..we cant see him he cant see us..im still as can be..dads behind me calling..bird putts and flys away!! we go out to the main trail to discuss what our next plan is to see a guy running through the woods looking for something he lost!! we was within 20yds of where the bird flew! i am going to try to find private farms or hunt the national forest where the birds dont know what a hunter is when i drive...

Well Mr L,The way I see it you didn't know the other hunter was there before you moved. But you knew the bird would be next to impossable to call across so you were savy enough to move while the other hunter wasn't.In my opinion you out hunted the other hunter so you deserved the bird.Congrats

Got to agree with what you did, its not like you got between the other hunter and a bird that was coming in to him. I never like to get a public land bird firing off constantly for the very reason that he will probably call in another hunter with all that gobbling. Once I know where he is I`ll move and set-up(with no valleys, fences or other things that will cause him to hang-up) between us. I will admit to hearing another hunter working a bird and I know the bird is answering him but keeps moving away, and since i`ve scouted this bird I know where he`s going. I`ve moved way out in front and waited while the other hunter just kept pushing the bird to me.

I would have to agree with everyone here. It wasn't like you intenionally cut the other hunter off. You did not know he was there before you committed to going after the longbeard. You took the time and effort to cross the ravine and you deserved the gobbler. Congrats!

Ken, I would of done the very same thing!! One thing I have to mention that many of us realize, is this. How can you tell if it's another hunter or an actual hen doing the calling? The reason I brought this up is that one day in the past, me and B.I.L. were walking up this ridge when I suddenly heard this awfull sounding hen calling from down below. We both stopped and listened, and I mentioned that this was the worst sounding hunter on a box call I ever heard!! Low and behold, a real hen came walking up near us!! So again, just how sure can you be it's a hunter unless you can actually &quot;see&quot; the guy? Again, ken you did well by outsmarting that gobbler, hat's off to you!!<img src=icon_smile_wink.gif border=0 align=middle>
