Turkey Hunting Whether it's spring or fall doesn't matter to this bunch. Great tips on calling, bustin flocks, using blinds and more.

Default Help me understand!

I've heard comments from some hunters on public land that state that if you do too much calling or loud calling that other hunters will show up. I've never experienced this on public land but would love to understand what is in that hunters mind.

When I hear another hen calling in the woods I assume it is another hunter and do not go that direction. Are there hunters on this forum that GO TO hen calls and why would you do that knowing a hunter could be on the other end.

Not that i'm an expert turkey hunter, but i always assume it's another hunter [for safety reason] until proven otherwise. It sometimes pays off to wait and see. LAst spring i had a hen answer my calls. I was sure she was another hunter because she was making such a racket. I sat down and made a few yelps. She eventually came to within 20 yds. Madder than a hornet that another "hen" was on her turf. Her 10 minute display was an awesome sight. I've never has the chance to witness that before. Her calling also helped me bag a neat bird. Check him out...

I wouldn't necessarily try it on public land but I have indeed setup on a hen and successfully called in her in with a longbeard trailing behind silently.

I think alot of calling will keep a tom gobbling more which will attract other hunters on public land.

I've had my share of turkeys shot out from under me. Frustrating but that is public hunting where you always get lazy/disrespectful gun hunters out there. When I hear a call from another hunter and then a distant gobble, I just smile and wish the guy good luck. I NEVER think "maybe I could get in between them and pick that tom off". Now I will compete with him if I was already setup with my blind and decoys but I would not if I was just moving from one setup to another. It would be his bird to take.

I agree Lefty and not only have I had this nasty experience on public but private also when luckily I spotted two idiots sneaking up on me while i was working a flock of turks! To top it off one of the morons was sporting a 270!!Scared me to death at first, but when that wore off I went crazy mad!!If I hear a hen I give it a little time and hold my ground! Its ludicrous to barge right in even on a gobbler on public ground! Most accidents and mistakes we make afield are do to inexperience and the fact we get in a rush!To survey the situation first is a must in the turkey woods not only for your safety but for the safety of others ,and has a lot of credit towards the outcome of a hunt!
