Turkey Hunting Whether it's spring or fall doesn't matter to this bunch. Great tips on calling, bustin flocks, using blinds and more.

Default Scouting

How early do you guys start scouting? I deer hunted some new land this year and I noticed that turkeys consistently roosted about 400 yards from my stand. I'm planning to start scouting the area again here in a couple weeks, but I am wondering how much do turkey patterns change during the year? In other words, can turkeys be expected to frequent the same areas in the spring as they do in the fall? Thank you for any advice.

not necessarily, as their food source changes they may move. Seasonal movement may differ in most areas. An example where I hunt most birds winter on ranches that are feeding cattle. About 2 weeks before the opening of the spring season the large flocks start to break-up. THay have been knwn to go 25 miles real quick. These are Merriam turkey. Your birds are different just keep an eye on them. Never too early to scout.

Turkey do tend to break up into smaller breeding groups in the spring. Rio's probably move the farthest in actual range from winter to spring, but generally speaking, yes they tend to move in the same area unless influenced. I usaully start scouting about a month before season by just listening, or by spotting scope. I do not use turkey calls or locater calls, I let them naturally gobble. I never move in onany turkey any sooner than the night before I plan to hunt them to get a good roost position, and never leave until well after dark if I get too close. I see no reason in educating the birds.
