Turkey Hunting Whether it's spring or fall doesn't matter to this bunch. Great tips on calling, bustin flocks, using blinds and more.

Default Advice when Starting Newbie?

Just looking for any advice i can get about starting off a young hunter. My 12 year old nephew who has spent time with me turkey hunting can shot a bird this year and i was hoping to avoid any pitfalls that could happen. He has to be within arms reach so safety i can control but is there any special advice as far as preparing him for the shot.

I would think if you take him and show him the proper way to setup on a bird at a tree, and exsplain alittle of what can happen , he have a good idea what to exspect. Then when it is time to hunt and your going to setup have him sit in front of you at the same tree, this way you can refresh me and guide him to the right shot with out making alot of noise...BT

I like them with Long Sharp Spurs....

Default RE: Advice when Starting Newbie?

This last spring I had a young man from NJ hunting with us. Although he had been shooting geese, grouse and deer, he had no experience with turkey hunting. I simply explained what I did when I did it, kept him calm and taught him what scenerios can happen. Once I had the birds talking, I explained what was going every so often. Explain what to look for in a gobbler vs a hen and so. Once the birds starting entering the scene, I simply tried to keep him calm as I heard his breathing pick up, the gun barrel starting to roam and when to pull the trigger. Needless to say, he missed the first bird at 30 yards.....I pulled in another an hour later and he missed it at 15 yards and an hour later he collected his first spring gobbler on his third shot of the day....I had a great time.
