Turkey Hunting Whether it's spring or fall doesn't matter to this bunch. Great tips on calling, bustin flocks, using blinds and more.

Default First Turkey Hunt Help

Hey everyone, this spring will be my first turkey hunt. I am very excited. Some of you can probably relate. Anyhow, I shoot a Win. 1300 and am trying to find the right choke and loads for it. What are your thoughts?

what gauge? for 12 ga i would suggest a full, extra full,or super full choke.find who makes what for chokes for Winchester guns.i like federal turkey loads in the 3" offering, #4 shot.also check out winchester, remingotn, and the other major brands.#6 or #4 shot will do the job.maybe someone can help you some more.

I will concur with brokenbucket. That setup works very well for me in my 1300's. Although my likes a heavy load of #5 federals. Your expereince may differ as all guns will not perform the same.

Ps. If you're near a gander mountain check out the clearance bins. They have strut stopper for $35.

Good Luck!

I don't recommend using the Xtra full factory Win choke. I have a XXFull Comp-n-choke, and there's lots of other good aftermarket choke tubes out there. If you can't find any shells marked as turkey loads don't fret, try look for #4, #5(a hard size to find) or #6 hi-speed loads. Federal makes a hi-speed high brass load that'll do the job.
I went to the field these last two springs with 2.75" Winchester Supreme, #4 shot. (I'da bought 3" if they had'em at the store) They worked fine.

Just a word to the wise. I prefer to bowhunt turkeys, but when I first started I was a die hard gun hunter. Try not to get your choke tube to tight. Stick with something that is around .625. If you get a pattern that is to tight you may have problems hitting a bird that is on the move. I have seen it several times when hunters miss because of a tight choke. Many times you have to take a moving shot. Just a heads up to you.
