I've been in a rut the past few weeks because I havent really even seen any turkeys this season. I've been hunting every weekend since it opened and even went to south Ga. for a "guarenteed" hunt. So, Saturday morning I hopped in my truck and headed out to the woods again. I stopped and picked up my luckey breakfast (hunny bun and Dr.Pepper in a can) thinking this could be the day.
Set up on a powerline and waited...... dawn came and went. Nothing respnded to my calls all morning. By 9:45 I'm dumped. It's the same old thing as every Saturday. I picked up my decoys and started walking knowing it was too early to go but I was busted. I went up the trail and stopped. I thought "what else do I have to do today. Sit your dumb butt down and enjoy the morning." So I set back up right off a food plot that had been plowed over. The decoys no more than 15 yards from me (under a thick pine tree). So I sat and sat ......and sat. Every now and then putting out a cluck or yelp. Not getting a single responce. At around 11:00 I saw a jake step into the field. I thought "holy crap!!!!" Slowly, Ipulled up my gun. He took two steps and 4 more jakes followed him out. I thought "HOLY CRAP It's a Jake gang!!!" No gobble no cluck nothing. My decoys we're not moving at all so I let out two light clucks from my mouth call. It was like I set them on fire. All five took a straight line form my Jake! I kept my beed on the largest bird. Once he was only 15 yards from my gun I took him down. The other 4started and looked around but didn't run. I took aim on another standing only 15 yards away right next to my Jake and took him down. Two of the others flew off but one stayed. I took aim but remembered I had only chambered two shells. I waited for him to fly off and walked out to collect my trophys. Now let me say. They weren't the biggest birds ever. Both right at 16lbs. (probably onlya year two years at the most)and the beard's were only 5 1/2 inch but they were my first. I'm just glad to have the "No, I've neverkilled a bird" monkey off my back. AND I had a great time.I'm mounting the first one I shot and I already cooked one up for dinner last night and enjoyed. Thought you guys would like to hear about it. Thanks for all the advice and help you have given to me on my first season. Without this web-sight I wouldn't have had a season at all.

Congrats on your first birds. Those are pretty big jakes. Now you are officially hooked for life. Also, way to go for sticking with it and not giving up. In turkey hunting always expect the unexpected. I've killed several birds when I thought I didn't stand a chance.
congrats on the birds good story the jake gang part was pretty funny lol thanks for getting me all pumped for my season i have to wait till the 28th to take out my cousin for youth day then may 1st i hit the woods to bag a bird
I was getting pretty bummed. Our season is from March 24th to April 15th and it's winding down. So, when I saw those jakes come out litteraly I was like "Yesssssssss!" I know it's kinda stupid to mount a jake but it was my first so it's going on the wall.

I had to hide the heads cause they were all bloody and my son was standing with my wife taking the picture. He's only 4 and still gets a little sensitve about blood and guts.
