Default Turkey Spur Necklace

Do any of you all know how to make a necklace loop with the spurs from a turkey? I saw the idea in a magazine and thought it looked real neat. I figure after I get a few birds I would start working on it.

Ive made one from really long pheasant spurs so I would imagine the concept would be the same. What seemed to work for me was to let the legs dry out which seemed to dry out the meat on the inside of the spur. Then I took the smallest drill bit I had, dont know the size but Id say the smaller the better, you dont want too big of a hole. I would drill out a hole clear through the spur about halfway up to try to prevent cracking. After drilling the hole you will have to figure out a way to pry the spur off without damaging it. Using a pair of pliers I was able to kinda loosen up the spur around the base and pop it off with a knife. After I had my collection of spur beads I let them dry out again, then started threading them with fishing line and some beads made from stones I found in the basement. I'll get some pics of what mine with pheasant spurs looked like. Hope this helps. Ask if you have any questions and Ill try to answer them. BR

The way I have seen it done is to cut about a 1/2 on each side of the spur and drill a hole through the center of the leg and thread it on. All this is done after it has dried however.

No drilling required. You just push the marrow out. The leg bone is already hollow. You can do this right away and clean it well. Then let it dry. I bleach the bone part a little and the use clear nail polish to harden and protect.

i do mine like OntElk. saw the leg bone above and below the spur. clean out the marrow and skin them(ive seen them with the skin left on though) and dry them and clean them up...works nicely. i got one in my truck hanging from the rear view mirror.

Check out the spur collection a friend of mine has. You can also see his necklace in the pic as well.
