Default Bearded Hen question

Can bearded hens have red heads? I was wondering, since my uncle shot a beared bird, and it didn't have spurs, it had lots of yellow fat when we field dressed it, and it didn't have a jake tail, it looked like the way a mature gobbler's tail would be, but it did have a reddish head, so I wonder if he bagged a bearded hen?

For now, we can only assume it's a jake.

Usually a bearded hen doesnt grow a huge beard. I have also seen toms with no spurs. How long was the beard and what color was the tail fan. To be honest hens have a very pretty tail fan but it doesnt compare to a gobblers tail fan. I wish you had a pic then we could tell you in a blink of an eye...

most bearded hens beards are really thin. ive seen them upto 8 or 9 inches long...but REALLY thin.

ive seen toms without spurs.

ive seen toms with big spurs and not a beard to be found.

ive watched a hen turn her head a shade of pinkish red and STRUT. thats no joke...im 10000% sure it was a hen.

its easy to tell by body size and color.

if it's a hen , she will have feathers all the way up to the top of her head.not totallt feathered, just some small one's. notice the difference of how a gobblers head ;is sorta like a shave.

what did it weigh? I killed a gobbler years ago which weighed 21 pounds, had a nice 10" beard, a large breast sponge, the typical black fringed breast feathers and where spurs was supposed to be he had the spur scales like a first fall jake, talked to a few folks in the area and it wasn't uncommon for a gobbler to not have spurs.

I shot a bearded hen last year that had a pretty thick 6" beard, but no spurs or red wattles. Her head was grayish blue like a normal hen.

It did have a thin beard, but it was probably 8 inches or 7 inches long.
