I am going to try and use my bow for turkey hunting this year and I was wondering what would be a good broadhead for turkeys. Everyone that I have asked usually tell me mechanical broadheads are the way to go. I already have bought some Hammerhead 100's, will these do the trick? I am open for suggestions.
Any broadhead will do the job if you hit the bird where your suppose to. I use the same broadheads that I used the deer hunting season before.....i also turn my draw weight down. Between the duller broadheads and the lower weight, he arrow should stay in the bird....which is really what you want.

Let's see, if I were to use the same broadheads I use for deer which are the razoer sharp stainless steel inner-loc 1.125" cut three blade, and dulled them up so they would stay in the bird but not cut many blood vessels, I wonder if the 1.75" mech. head with sharp blades going through the bird would do more damage and kill the bird quicker! Hmmmmm. I wonder... lots of blood loss out of two holes or little bloodloss out of one hole.. which is better........ I thinkI'll stick with sharp blades cutting a big as$ hole!
Point being, the bird won't go far even if the arrow goes all the way through with a good large sharp cutting mech. head! Dull blades make no sense! Arrows kill by creating hemmoraging! The more and faster bloodloss equals a quicker kill!

Broadheadsneed a different effect on turkies. Its not all about hemmoraging as it would be ona big game animal. It is more about the shock value of the arrow hitting the bird. The most effective I have seen is a regular broadhead with an adder point behind the head. I go 25 grains lighter than normal and then add the adder which is about 25 grains to get my 125 grains. I have never seen an adder go through a turkey and it sounds like you just hit it with a golf club...
Also bludgeons to the head put them right down......
I have seen several turkies get away with passthroughs. You want the arrow to stay in them. If they lock those wings, they will sail clear to the bottom of the hill and no blood to follow.
The point being, if any broadhead doesn't hit vitals, the turkey is gone, might be carrying your arrow, but no vitals hit is a lost bird no matter what!
The turkeys we have shot with large expandable haven't gotten out of our sight. They die very quickly!

Howler...buddy buddy buddy, you have got to read a little closer. I said any broadhead will do the job if the bird is hit in the right place. I've seen and heard of many bird getting away with pass-throughs. Basically it is harder for a bird to fly away when there is an arrow pinning it's wing to it's body.
So relax, take a deep breath, and everything will be okay. We never said anything bad about mechanical/sharp broadheads, because they can kill a bird too, we simply said we prefer the arrow to stay in the bird.

Hmmm..never seen a wing pinned to the turkeys body though! I'd guess the loss of his legs would keep him from flying quicker than a wing pinned to his body?[8D]Surely you've never heard or seen a turkey get away with an arrow still in it![]
