Turkey Hunting Whether it's spring or fall doesn't matter to this bunch. Great tips on calling, bustin flocks, using blinds and more.

Default Turkey's and West Nile Virus

I was looking in my Michigan DNR web site and noticed an article about West Nile Virus and I read it.
They cautioned that if you suspect your bird having this virus you should let your DNR or Fish and Game check it out.
Although no humans never been infected by eating the meat they recomend that you cook it at intrenal temp: of 170 to 180 degrees to kill all bacteria and virus..
They also stated that if you see a wild turkey acting strange or abnormal by not being able to fly and there head keeps dropping , not being able to keep it up or walking like it's drunk , stagering.
Chances are that bird might have the virus with those symptoms and last but not least you should always clean and diisinfect all your cutting utinsels with hot soapy water with at least 10 % bleach in it.
I thought I would give everyone here a heads up and a word of caution about this virus.

I am not saying that you are wrong but there is no proof that the west nile virus affects turkeys.

Here's a good read from Bob Ericksen, Regional NWTF Biologist...
