Default Deerhunter thinking of giving it a try!

Hey guys,
I have never turkey hunted and kno very little about it. I have seen some in my area but never in the deer woods I hunt. What kind of sign do you look for when it comes to turkeys? Also does calling really work, ( I mean like blind calling) I think I will need to get a new shotgun also.
Anyone turkey hunt in New England? Just looking for some advice on this new sport for some of you experienced in it since i have none.

Thanks
Jim

Welcome to the sport of turkey hunting , your gonna love it .
May I suggest that you pick up a copy of a hard cover book titled ( Wild Turkey ) it's from the complette hunter series.
This book is full of useful information from calling, equipment , scouting and hunting techniques.
You should be able to find this book at most sporting goods stores even place's like Meijer ,K - Mart , Wal - Mart orWalley World.

Oh yeah RDHunter said it right Welcome to the sport of turkey hunting. There is no other sport that is as exciting as turkey hunting. From the first morning when I started turkey hunting I was hooked. Theres nothing like it. OK start looking for some easy calls to start practicing. Box calls are good slates are good. Yes calling turkeys in works. Thats how ya do it. Get a good shotgun and turkey choke. I myself use a Mossberg 500 with 3in mag 2 oz load 5 shot.Pattern your gun... Researchand practice as much as you can...

So are turkey like deer in the sense that they will follow a pattern? How do you find them in the woods??? Also are they good eating???

Thanks

Jim

No, they are not good eating, they are great eating. The gobblers will be where the hens are during the spring.

I second that one. Just thinking of it puts a smile on my face and makes my stomach twirl. ~ Seriously. Give it a try and like a few other people have mentioned, watch as many videos and read as many books as you can.

They kinda follow a pattern in a sense but it's a diffrent pattern every day , they'll roost in the same area but when they fly down they go in a difffrent direaction from one day from the other.
In the spring when the breeding season comes around the gobblers will roost close to where the hen's do.
Once they are on the ground they will travel to a water source and they will be scratching and looking for food as they go about there day.
The gobblers will be heading for a struting area to fan out and display there proud plumage for the ladies.
When scouting look around big oak or pine trees for feathers and dropings.
the dropings will look like cigar butts , a little green in color and some what straight , some will have a little curve at the end.
Also look for clearings like meadows or fields edges , even a old dirt road where it's sandy they like to dust them selves off at least once a day.
When they do travel , they will make a big huge circle and end up where they flew down.

You will probably get hooked like the rest of us. I used to like deer hunting the best. Then a few years ago I started hunting turkeys more and more. Well lets just say its my favorite now. You came to the right place to learn about it. I personally like to find strut zones and wait for them there and try to call them in. I can call turkeys but it always seems I get mine by patterning them. Good luck!!!!!!!
