Default Removing flesh around beard.

How do you remove the flesh around the beard or dry it out so I can mount it to a board. Is salt ok for a few weeks?

Heres what i do with the beards.

I take some black or brown sewing string and tightly wrap it around the top area of the beard, this allows me to carefully trim away excess fleash without the possibility of the beard falling apart. Then i just salt it and let it dry for a week or two.Ill see if i can get some posts up in alil.

salt the meat and let it dry, then you can either use hot glue, or parrafin wax, like they use to put on top of the jelly jars. without the flesh all you'll have is loose strands of hair.

Something that works better then salt is Borrox , you can get it in the washing soaps departemnt in a store. You can trim it now or leave it untill after it drys...

Another thing is if you want to take any bad bends in the beard out, just steam the beard over a kettle and then place it under something like a book and let it cool...

There's an easier way to get a clean beard. Just pull it out of the bird. It pops out just like any other feather, clean as a whistle. Nothing to salt, no extra flesh, just a clean end.

I just cut mine off. Then trim the excess skin away after the end dries.
I have shoebox full and they never fell apart yet.

Borax works great.RR makes a good suggestion here in using hot glue or wax.Not only does this help in keeping the beard together over the years but more impotantly helps in keeping mites and weevils from eating your beard which will cause your trophy to fall apart.Pesky little critters, theyll make a meal of your tailfan too!!
