Turkey Hunting Whether it's spring or fall doesn't matter to this bunch. Great tips on calling, bustin flocks, using blinds and more.

Default to scope, or not to scope?

I've been debating the use of a scope on my mossberg 500. I realize that turkey shooting and shotguns are done at closer proximity than deer hunting. At 39 though, I feel that my eyes are not as good as they once were. Also, I've been wearing glasses since the 7th grade. I did come across Bushnell's dusk till dawn 1.5-4.5 x 32mm shotgun scope, any thoughts?

well my vote is against scopes, because for most people they are not needed. but with yur bad eyes this may be yur only option. i kno people who use them and love them and people that hate them....i guess if i was you i would try it to help my sight while aiming at those longbeards

Schlemer,

I for one have always laughed at folks using a scope for turkeys', until this past turkey season, never again will I laugh. I let a couple of big gobblers walk away because I thought they was to far from me. Later, on each of them, I steped off the distances and it was only 35 steps and 37 steps.

I'm 57, been wearing glasses all my life, and had to realize my eyes keep geting worse. My depth perception is going fast.

JW, one of the forum members, recommended that I try the Nikon monarch (turkey pro) scope. I got it after turkey season and put it on a new turkey gun I bought after turkey season. I set up turkey targets at unknown distances and it worked as they advertised it. I ordered mine from Cabelas'. Thanks to JW, I think this coming turkey season will be a little different.

As I said, I laugh at scopes no more!

Thanks for the feedback,

After my first hunt, I realize and appreciate the scope on my Mossy. Though I used binoculars to survey the area for predators (human and non). I found that using the scope gave me a clean and clear view of my focal point. It also allowed me to see beyond my perspective target, just in case I needed to hold off my shot, because of unforeseen bystanders missed with a blind eye.

I also like it because I can mount it to my mossberg's 24" riffled barrel for deer hunting.

No problem with low light or anything with my scopes,i know one thing when i have multiple birds coming in together i can see there spurs out there further most of the time and shoot the best bird. A scoped out turkey hunter has got it figured out.And every season i see more and more of it..so you non believers nned to try one out.good luck...

I never have used a scope on a turkey gun, just fiber optic sights, but I do think a scope with low magnification (like 1.5X) would be pretty nice. I am thinking about setting my 20 gauge up with a scope and use it for turkey once in a while. I am going to leave my truglo sights on my 12 though.
