Turkey Hunting Whether it's spring or fall doesn't matter to this bunch. Great tips on calling, bustin flocks, using blinds and more.

What shot size do you recommend for turkey?

Depends some on what your gun will shoot well. My 870 super mag shoots Win. HV's 3 1/2" copper plated 2 OZ, 5 shot out of a Madd Maxx .665 choke really well.

4's,5's,and 6's,are the norm simply because these particular shot sizes carry enough down range energy to penetrate a gobblers vital areas via head/neck via brain/neck vertabrae. But a few factors play into this such as knowing how far is 'to far' to shoot. Most turkey hunters will tell ya including this one keep your shots inside 40 yards. But even with that said as SJ pointed out his own gun patterns 5's well,so its up to you to pattern your own turkey thumper to find out what particular load/shotsize your gun patterns consistent up to that 40 yard mark.
Also in many states It is illegal to turkey hunt with shotshells loaded with shot heavier than 2's,somake sure and check your regs.
My own gun likes lead 4's,the turkeys dont!!......

Idon't mean to hijack this thread but my son has a 20 and it is ok out to 30 yards with a 2 3/4 5 shot I'm thinking 3 inch 6 shot would be better any input ?

Well John, I also have a Savage 24V which has a 20ga Modified 3", but I always grab the Win mod. 12 2 3/4" Modified. Look at the places I hunt,

Longest Kill Shot w/ Shotgun?

Pattern your gun with afew different loads, you might be surprised.
But since you did ask for a recommendation...

Winchester Supreme 3" #4 shot is a load I like.

If you want to spill some $$, go for a 3" Hevi-shot #4. It absolutely, positively gets down range in a hurry and hits with authority.

I haven't tried the Federal Mag-Shok stuff.

John,,tough to say until you pattern them.I can tell you if you were to take a load of ounce & half 5's and ounce & half 6's you'd have somewhere in the nieghborhood of about 88 more pellets mixed in with the 6's because of the smaller diameter of the shotsize even though there both once & half loads. But with that said it still doesn't mean the 6's having more pellets in the load will have a higher pattern percentage than the 5's,plus the 6's as lethal as they are dont carry the knockdown power via(down range energy)that 4's and 5's have particularly on shots over 40 yards....Bob
