Being Jalvja , don't see any humour in my posts anymore , I will stand on more of a serious note from here on in. GEZZZZZZZZ- Crabby , don't make the world go around [&o]

Fall Turkey hunting can be done in a number of ways. As some of our professional people above have gave their tricks that give them the success that they get in the fall, I will allow my thoughts to wander as well.

I have fall hunted a number of times and have been successfull at it as well. Just a side note, to the hunting that is so much unlike the spring hunt, I still find it exciting to sit in the fall woods and enjoy the time. The hunt is so much different and I enjoy the way a hunter has to change his tactics to work these birds.

I have learned a number of things over the years and from some our own Crabby Turkey hunters on this board

Years back I was lucky enough to get invited to MI and exsperence the Fall hunting tactic's of a turkey dog. It was kinda neet to see this dog react to how it was trained to scatter flocks of fall birds and then back off to allow the hunters to get into place and call the family flock back.

I spent one season with Jalvja on the board where we scattered a falmily flock and then proceeded to call the birds back to our location. After the scatter we setup as close to the scatter point as we could and used calls like the assembly call and Kee-Kee-run call and I was lucky enough to take a first year jake/poult.

The next day or so we had info on a flock of family birds that roosted in a hollow from a bow hunter and headed there the next morning. I was the one , yes I was the guy that went into the dark canynon and walked along the side into the darkness to find the flock. I did and got a nice scatter that allowed Jalvja and Jannette to call 2 different birds at different times to the point of setup at the scatter location and they walked out happier then the 4th of July.

Last year was another different tactic , that I will say that Jalvja again was behind. He watched this group of Gobblers work this field edge for a week. I showed up and one afternoon I got setup along this travel path with Jalvja behind the same tree watching the short cut through the woods. Jalvja , don't like to sit in a thick area and it is hard to keep this guy in a place he don't like to be, but as we sat and we were quiet only calling the very odd time with plain soft yelps and clucks. I noticed the group of birds moving down the field edge we were on.

I didn't tell or say anything to Jalvja at the time because I was going to allow the birds to come into range and then take that sudden shot that he would walk different back to the truck and it was a long walk

Well as the birds came into range, I hear all kinds of moving behind me at the tree Wonder what that is I thought. So at the last minute I had to say, Don't move ! darn he screwed up my plans [&o]

As the birds came into range, they disapeared behind the thick cover. So I eased up and there they were 30 yards out all feeding away. I picked out the larges bearded bird and gave it to him. I killed a nice longbeard and yes jim was acccountable for that. After pic's we walked back to the truck and Jalvja walked ok with no funny walking ...BT

I want to get a Fall gobbler some day as well, but the dang fall season always falls right dead smack in the bow season. I wish that they would start the fall turkey season on the 1st of October like most of the state instead of the 20th!!! Like BT has stated, the fall season sure aint like the spring!!
I was up in a treestand bowhunting for deer when I spotted a lone gobbler on two seperate instances. I can natural turkey call with my mouth, and was so dang sure that I could call one in that I was shocked that those gobblers never moved a foot closer in my direction???? It appears to me that your going to have to be set up in a feed area like Jalvja mentioned, or a travel area and do the ambush thing. I'll have to try it again and see how I make out this fall!!

If you know where they (family flock)roost, then just set up near there and just before sunrise,do lost calling - loud, long pleading yelps. Don't bother scattering them, no need to... unless it's a flock of adult gobs, then a good scatter is a necessity.

Getting one would be a start![&:]And for me, discovered the hard way, don't call if they are coming your way! And last of all, remember your arrows if you are going bow hunting! [:'(][&o]

Find the roost if possible.....find there daily feeding and watering spots...be able to read there sign...
Finding there source of water can be big around these parts because we can be still really dry in mid Nov....

Patterning the birds prior to the seasons opening will greatly increase your chance of success.
As mentioned here before locating the food source is another good method of finding wandering fall flocks, that can change sometimes on a daily basis depending on the area you are planning on hunting so you really have to stay on top of it.
If your hunting farmlands crops can be harvested leaving little for the turkeys to feed on and they will move in search of food.
If hunting mountainareas such as stands of oaks or beechthey will feed in an area till the food thereis exhausted then move on until they locate more and begin the process all over again.
Three things that will get your bird.
Persistence, persistence and persistence.

Good hunting
