Do hens sit on the nest at night or roost?
My friend and I were having this discussion and could not come to a consensus. Anyone have any input here?

When it comes time for incubating, they sit at night!

ORIGINAL: turk2di When it comes time for incubating, they sit at night! After a hen lays her last egg, she'll sit the nest from then on out until the eggs hatch!!;) |

And, if a coon, or other predator finds the next and eats all the eggs, the hen will go back to roost and go through the whole process again!!

Exactly! Some toms will roost near nesting hens, and at daylight the hens can sometimes get to him just as fast as before, making you think he had a hen nesting with him.Once on the nest they turn the egss I think every 20 miutes, and leave the nest for only 1 hour a day. They are too busy trying to feed in that 1 hour,to breed, and can frustrate a tom.I saw one tomchasing after a hen, who's primary concern was catching bugs,he got so mad that she wouldn't pay him any attention he drove his wings down, and sent out a commanding gobble! She still did not pay him any attention.[8D]
