Turkey Hunting Whether it's spring or fall doesn't matter to this bunch. Great tips on calling, bustin flocks, using blinds and more.

Default First day....

Well it's finally here, and the weather was perfect. I just knew they'd be fired up today.
WRONG!
The sun came up, the birds sang, then at 7am, as I'm on this ridge I hear him , deep in the hollow.
I start with a few yelps, he'd hammer back, I'd cutt, he'd hammer back...
We played this game for around an hour, and with each gobble he would get a little farther away.
He was interested, but, not that interested.
He must be henned up.
Try again tomorrow.
Wish me luck...

Default RE: First day....

hmmmm....i know we all hear about toms getting henned up and all....but....i also read where we've given up WAYYY too early...if you have till noon to hunt?....hunt till noon....if you have all day....hunt all day...unless of course you have alternate plans....seems nowadays we give up too soon...we hear a gobbler going away from us....we decide they've got hens are we'll never see them again....we need to remember those hens WON'T stick around till fly up...soon they go to either nest or begin making a nest, depending on the transition their in....those same gobblers haven't forgotten where they heard another hen (you) and will try to find you...this is where patience is essential in the turkey woods/fields...i can't tell you all how much i love the run-n-gun method of taking turkeys but sometimes i know when to sit tight...call occasionally and expect the gobbler to come find me...
nothing against your hunt there ktbearpaws...like huntnma said....at least you had fun...and i'm sure you did....the weather, the turkeys talking like that musta been awesome and i can only wish my opening day is like that.
this post should probably be a separate post and i hope i haven't discouraged you on hunting that bird again....i'm sure your gonna call him in and make a great harvest on an adult gobbler...good luck on that bird
