Default A day off, Pays Off!!! First Turkey!!!

After many years of hunting deer, I decided to give turkey hunting a try. I just wish I would have tried sooner! I don't think I could describe exactly how exciting it really was! I decided after last hunting season that I would try my luck at turkey hunting. So I practiced all last year and the past few months with all my calls... box, slate, mouth diaphram. Then scouted forthree weeks(about8 times)prior to opening day. Of which, one of the scouting trips was with my 4 (soon to be 5) year old son. One of the best days of my life, but that is another story! Anyway, just as opening day comes, life puts the brakes on any extra-curricular fun. A few bills showed up that i wasn't expecting andsince i workin law enforcement, I needed towork some extra part-time to take care of them. It's a great job but the pay leaves much to be desired!!! So, I finally got a chance to go this morning and man what an experience!!!!!!! I gotin the woods and into my blind(with decoys out)about 5 am. I set up about 100 yds. from the roost along a tree line that faces a small field. As soon as the light broke, they were fired up! I tried calling and they responded but keep hanging up. About 7am I finally noticed 2 nice Toms feeding to my left. Then out came a third Tom in strut!!! After a couple soft calls, the third Tom came marching right at my decoys! Hewalked right in front of meand stopped at least than 10 yds. Well needless to say, as soon as his neck went up.... HE WENT DOWN!!!!!!
I have to say of all my years hunting, Ican't remember a time I have been in the woods where things were so vocal and so visual. I also got some great pictures and will post them soon.

21 pounds 4 ounces
9 inch beard
1 1/4 right spur

Yeah, I have been trying to get him more involved and he loves it! I took him earlier this year on his first deer hunt. I let him take control of the grunt call and he just got so exccited that I didn't care what happened the rest of the day. Now he is practicing on his box call! Good luck the rest of the season!
