Friday April 14th my son, brother-in-law and I sat in a ground blind about 3 hours after the morning fly down. We set up in an area were we had seen birds a couple days earlier and were hoping to catch one wondering by. My bro-in-law was doing some soft cluck and purrs and some soft yelps about every 15 - 20 min with no response. But then we saw 3 hens coming right towards us with a nice gobbler behind them coming up the hill in full strut! He slid off to our left but made it with in about 15yds of the blind but stayed just on the backside of a small hill were we could not get a clean kill shot off. As he walked off and the rush of that big gobbler being so close without being able to get a shot off went away we all felt like the days hunt was over[:@]! Just as we were about to leave the blind we heard, about 25-30 yds behind us, very loud wing beats and fighting noises. After that ended we all sat very still. Then in walked what I assumed to be the looser of that fight! He came in quietly & all alone from our left "..I handed my son his gun"..he slllooowwwlly rested it across the top of the blind and after what seemed like forever I heard the safety.."""...click".....BOOM!! One shot!!..I stepped it of @ 30 paces (I"m 6"1"). Rem youth 870 w/undertaker & Rem Hevi #6"s. I don"t know who was more excited him or me!! I know it is a moment as a father I will never forget and I hope it is a memory that lasts my son a lifetime also!
This is only my 3rd year of Turkey hunting, so, I want to say THANK YOU! To all that post here on a regular basis, I have learned A LOT about hunting Turks just by regularly checking out this site. Thanks again"..SD
Tell that young gun congrats from me!! I'm a good 4 years older than him and I've yet to bag a turkey. Congrats to you as well, I'm sure it is something you won't forget either.
Man, that is just awesome right there! A day you both will remember. Congrats to both of you!
