Default Day 4, dog1s' antics.

It's day 4 of our Ga. season and I'll go ahead and say it, "yes it's only 10:09 a.m. and I'm back at the house."

I've come to the conclusion that I must stink, have dog hokky on my boots, or something I don't know about, I washed last night, so that can't be the problem. Maybe somebody has rubbed two chicken bones on me.

I woke at 2 this morning, left for the hunting land at 4, got there, got my stuff together and siting at the strut zone of the bird I've been hunting since 5. It was cloudy this morning and the only bird that made a sound was 4 million miles across the fence. I sat there til 7 a.m. and decided this can't be good. So I take off and circle around to the other side of the zone and set up, with decoys I might add, 2 to be exact.

I lay all my toys out and start a calling sequence Pat Ely would have been proud of, sounds likea harem of hens waiting on the big boy. Must add, there are some rules that we need to follow when turkey hunting and most novices know them.

Cardinal rule #1: Stay put. He was in his strut zone.
Cardinal rule #2: I worked with him til 9 a.m., and most people know, if he shuts up, there's normally 3 possibilities: EITHER HE'S DEAD, DON'T LIKE WHAT HE HEARS AND MOVES ON, OR, OR, OR, OR, OR, HE'S COMING YOUR WAY, DON'T, I REPEAT, DON'T STAND UP.!Now any dummy knows that, right. Well my right foothad gone numb about an hour earlier, I thought, aw he's gone, won't hurt nuthing, just get a little blood to my toes'. You guessed it, there he came with two hens behind trying to stop this idiot. Well so much for them, they all ran off in different directions, that'll teach them.
Cardinal rule # 3: Don't lace your snake boots up so tight.
Cardinal rule # 4: Don't quit so early, which I blame on the part time job I used to have before they quit funding the program. I normally do land measurement service, walk in plowed fields all day, couldn't stop me. Well last year some genious with the government decides I need a GPS for my measuring. Well not being out done, I figure this this thing will work good on my atv, which it did, however, I don't tend to walk much anymore. I am totally exhausted. It's supposed to rain tomorrow, I personally hope it rains 5 or 6 inches, so hard you can't see to drive, then I'll have an excuse for not turkey hunting tomorrow.

dog1 the big dummy.

Oh man thats a bummer. Keep at it, you'll get him sooner or later. If I was you I'd setup in that strut zone again. He might come back, or another bird might try to use that zone. Good luck and let us know how it goes.

Waaaaaaaaa!
Okay - new tactic dog!

Go to the strut zone - pull out a lawn chair and tell yourself - I am gonna take a nap.......Bring a good book to read........just sit there an relax and watch the world go by.....
Use only one decoy.....off to the side and sorta hidden that he can't see from any long distance....but can see if he gets close to stop him in range....
Let's see- ...oh bring coffee....relax....shoot already said that!

Kinda hard to type with all thse fingers crossed!

That's the kind of experience that just makes you come back for more, you were so close to sealing the deal. One thing I think I learned last year was patience. I'm sure this year I'll have to learn that lesson all over again.
