Turkey Hunting Whether it's spring or fall doesn't matter to this bunch. Great tips on calling, bustin flocks, using blinds and more.

Default A little help......

I need a little help on my choke situation. I am shooting the new 835 with 20in. barrel and the X factor choke (.695). Im putting around 45 shot in head and neck at 30 yds but there is a big difference beyond that. I was thinking about getting a little tighter choke like the Jelly Head(.690) or a briley choke(.675) but is the briley too tight? Thats a big jump. I was just wondering and will appreciate any advice. Thanks.

I shoot an 835 with 24'' barrel and use the factory ulti-full choke and shoot the 1 3/4oz. hevi 13 #6's. I am getting an average of 16 pellets in the brain and spine of a primos turkey target at 40 yards. I shot a gobbler yesterday at 49 yards wich is a little to far but killed him graveyard dead. I'm not sure the constriction of the ulti-full choke but it works good out of my gun.

45 in the head and neck at 30 yds is really good! What is the difference at 40? It shouldn't be that bad. What is the count at longer distances?

I agree.

I wouldn't go too much tighter.

I would not go with any tighter of a choke, especially if you are using Hevi-shot or one of the other heavy weight shotshells. I have tried numerous chokes and shells over the years, use to think years ago the tighter the better, but that is not the case.
If I were you, and I did anything, I would probably start by trying different shells. But with what you have now at 30 yards, I agree, that is not bad.
Good luck with your chase for that great pattern, we have all been there and done that!!! I wish there was a magic answer to give you, but there is not, as I'm sure you know, what might work great in my 835, just might suck in yours.

I agree with Rupster. Try different shot types. What shot are you shooting?

I am shooting the federal flight control 3in 2oz. 5 shot I have tried winchester supreme, remington Nitros, Hevi-Shot, and Federal regualr turkey loads. The flight control shot the best of all, the cheap 4 dollar a box nitros wasnt too bad either. But im going from around 45 in head and neck at 30yds to only like anywhere from like 7 to 12 at 40yds. Thats why i thought something tighter may help out that far and prevent me from losing 30 shot in a matter of 10yds.I have taken my last 2 gobblers at 35 and 45 yards. But that was my dads gun, I just need to find whats good for mine.
